Texte explicatif

Combing the giraffe" is understood to mean lazing around, doing nothing interesting.
According to some hypotheses, the origin of this expression goes back to 1827, the year in which a giraffe was shown for the first time in France. It had been sent by the Pasha of Egypt, Mehemet Ali, to Charles X. The anecdote says that the keeper of the Jardin des Plantes, where the famous giraffe was received, was accused of chronic inactivity and that, to defend himself, he said he was "painting the giraffe". However, Claude Duneton, relying on texts by Jacques Cellard, specifies that until 1945, no text mentions this expression. It would therefore certainly have been invented a posteriori.
Basing her work on this expression, Svetà Marlier chose to portray her own son, who is obsessed with the video game "Fortnite".
But in addition to creating a work inspired by the expression "combing the giraffe", the artist wanted to portray a Salvator Mundi or Saviour of the world of the 21st century. This is also the reason why she decided to represent her child, who is convinced that he can save the world behind his screen. We can see that he is in the same position as in Leonardo da Vinci's famous painting.
